Michigan Against Atomic Waste is dedicated to safeguarding the health of our communities in Michigan, standing as a voice for families threatened by hazardous and radioactive waste. Michigan's unique geology requires a distinctive approach to waste management, one that respects the lands natural composition while prioritizing the safety of its residents. We hold a significant responsibility as custodians of 21% of the Earth's freshwater, and the way we manage our waste has far-reaching implications not just for our state but for the planet as a whole. The hazardous waste site near our community is not just a local issue; it's a state and national concern. Permitted to handle Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (TENORM), along with more than 700 other hazardous substances, this site is located in one of the most densely populated areas allowed to manage such materials. There's even a school within 500 feet of the site, amplifying the potential risks to our children and future generations. The issue is further complicated by the lack of transparency and the decisions often made in the interest of profit rather than public safety. We are committed to challenging the narratives that downplay the severity of these risks and pushing for stringent safety measures that reflect the realities of living near hazardous waste. We aim to bring awareness to the invisible threats that could compromise our well-being and the very environment that defines Michigan. Our advocacy extends beyond just highlighting the problem, we are here to propose solutions and to fight for policies that prioritize the health of our communities. By joining Michigan Against Atomic Waste, you're not just supporting a cause; you're standing up for clean air, safe water, and the right to live in a healthy environment. Together, we can push for meaningful change and protect the generations to come.
My name is Jess, and I'm a mother of four beautiful children, and married to my high school sweetheart and my favorite guy, Travis. Our family's journey took an unexpected turn when we realized that our recently purchased home was nestled in a community bordering the location of one an ever-expanding toxic landfill. Telling my family about the hazardous reality surrounding us was heartbreaking & infuriating. Thinking about our love for Michigan, the communities we cherish, the beautiful life we've built here, and the support that helped us achieve our dreams, has deepened my determination to fight for the transparency and safety that all families deserve. My mission is not just about my family's story, it's about advocating for the many people who unknowingly live close to hazardous and radioactive waste. I grew up surrounded by strong, inspiring individuals who taught me the importance of resilience and community. My mother has always been a true reflection of perseverance, guiding me with her unwavering strength. My sisters have shown me that with passion, nothing is impossible- so be bold in the face of adversity. I also carry with me the spirit of my brother, who was an incredible activist that rallied people worldwide to fight for justice. Lastly (and certainly not least), my uncle who changed the lives of my family and I with his generosity and support in my endeavors. Their grit and legacy along with the fierce individuals I've encountered in our community, fuel my drive to create change where it's needed most, and sparks my faith in knowing our voices matter. Intentionally living next to one of the nation's most prestigious hospitals, brought me comfort, but the irony is stark that we are close to world-class healthcare, yet living near a hazardous waste site that poses real health risks. The contrast serves as a reminder of why I fight: to ensure no family has to balance the scales between safety and their dreams.
