Michigan Against Atomic Waste is dedicated to safeguarding the health of our communities in Michigan, standing as a voice for families threatened by hazardous and radioactive waste. Michigan's unique geology requires a distinctive approach to waste management, one that respects the lands natural composition while prioritizing the safety of its residents. We hold a significant responsibility as custodians of 21% of the Earth's freshwater, and the way we manage our waste has far-reaching implications not just for our state but for the planet as a whole. The hazardous waste site near our community is not just a local issue; it's a state and national concern. Permitted to handle Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (TENORM), along with more than 700 other hazardous substances, this site is located in one of the most densely populated areas allowed to manage such materials. There's even a school within 500 feet of the site, amplifying the potential risks to our children and future generations. The issue is further complicated by the lack of transparency and the decisions often made in the interest of profit rather than public safety. We are committed to challenging the narratives that downplay the severity of these risks and pushing for stringent safety measures that reflect the realities of living near hazardous waste. We aim to bring awareness to the invisible threats that could compromise our well-being and the very environment that defines Michigan. Our advocacy extends beyond just highlighting the problem, we are here to propose solutions and to fight for policies that prioritize the health of our communities. By joining Michigan Against Atomic Waste, you're not just supporting a cause; you're standing up for clean air, safe water, and the right to live in a healthy environment. Together, we can push for meaningful change and protect the generations to come.
My name is Jess, and I'm a mother of four beautiful children, and married to my high school sweetheart and my favorite guy, Travis. Our family's journey took an unexpected turn when we realized our home was nestled in a community bordering the location of one an ever-expanding toxic landfill. Telling my family about the hazardous reality surrounding us was heartbreaking & infuriating. Thinking about our love for Michigan, the communities we cherish, the beautiful life we've built here, and the support that helped us achieve our dreams, has deepened my determination to fight for the transparency and safety that all families deserve. Unfortunately, too many others are facing the same challenges whether they know it or not - living near Superfund Sites, toxic landfills, waste treatment facilities, or chemical plants. This isn't just a local issue. It's a statewide crisis that affects the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the future we leave our children. Michigan must strengthen its regulations and put public health first.
