Our Mission
Michigan Against Atomic Waste is dedicated to safeguarding the health of our communities in Michigan, standing as a voice for families threatened by hazardous and radioactive waste. Michigan's unique geology requires a distinctive approach to waste management, one that respects the lands natural composition while prioritizing the safety of its residents. We hold a significant responsibility as custodians of 21% of the Earth's freshwater, and the way we manage our waste has far-reaching implications not just for our state but for the planet as a whole. The hazardous waste site near our community is not just a local issue; it's a state and national concern. Permitted to handle Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (TENORM), along with more than 700 other hazardous substances, this site is located in one of the most densely populated areas allowed to manage such materials. There's even a school within 500 feet of the site, amplifying the potential risks to our children and future generations. The issue is further complicated by the lack of transparency and the decisions often made in the interest of profit rather than public safety. We are committed to challenging the narratives that downplay the severity of these risks and pushing for stringent safety measures that reflect the realities of living near hazardous waste. We aim to bring awareness to the invisible threats that could compromise our well-being and the very environment that defines Michigan.
